What is Hugo?

Hugo is a static site generator written in Go. It takes your content (written in Markdown), applies templates and styling, and generates a complete website as plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. No database. No server-side processing. No PHP. The result is a site that loads instantly, costs almost nothing to host, and has an attack surface close to zero.

Why Hugo instead of WordPress?

WordPress runs on PHP and MySQL. Every page load requires a database query, server-side rendering, and plugin execution. That means slower load times, constant security patches, plugin conflicts, and hosting costs that scale with traffic. Hugo generates everything at build time. The output is flat files served from a CDN. No database to hack. No plugins to break. No server to maintain. PageSpeed scores of 100 are the norm, not the exception.

Is Hugo harder to update than WordPress?

Different, not harder. WordPress has a visual editor in the browser. Hugo uses Markdown files that you edit locally and deploy with a single command. If you are comfortable writing an email, you can write Markdown. For clients who want a visual editor, we can connect a headless CMS (like Decap CMS or CloudCannon) that provides a WordPress-like editing experience while keeping Hugo’s performance advantages.

What are the performance advantages of Hugo?

• Page load: Static HTML served from a CDN loads in under 1 second globally. WordPress pages typically load in 2-5 seconds without aggressive caching.

Can Hugo handle dynamic features like forms, search, and comments?

Yes, through different approaches. Forms connect to external services (GHL, Netlify Forms, Formspree). Search uses client-side libraries like Fuse.js that index your content at build time. Comments use external services (Disqus, utterances). The pattern is: generate static pages, connect dynamic features through APIs and JavaScript. You get the performance of static with the functionality of dynamic.

Does Hugo work with GoHighLevel?

They serve different purposes that work together. Hugo handles your main business website - the pages that need to rank in search, load fast, and establish authority. Hosting costs for most Hugo sites are $0-$20/month compared to $30-$100/month for managed WordPress hosting.

Can I add a blog to a Hugo site?

We use it as the foundation and override layouts and styles for each client’s brand. The theme is maintained actively and handles 90% of common website features without custom development.

How do you handle images on Hugo sites?

Hugo has built-in image processing - resizing, cropping, format conversion (WebP), and quality optimization. Images are processed at build time and cached. This means no runtime image processing, no slow loading from unoptimized uploads, and automatic generation of responsive image sizes. Combined with CDN delivery, images load fast regardless of the original file size.

Is Hugo good for SEO?

Excellent. Fast load times are a direct ranking factor. Hugo generates clean HTML with proper heading structure, semantic markup, and automatic sitemap/RSS generation. What if I outgrow Hugo?

If your needs genuinely shift to a platform requiring server-side processing (user accounts, real-time data, complex application logic), Hugo content in Markdown migrates cleanly to any other platform. You are not locked in. Your content is plain text files in a Git repository that you own.
